Policies & Other Information

Rights and Responsibilities

With the exception of student employment services, which are available to only regularly admitted students, registered summer students will have all the rights and privileges as well as the responsibilities accorded to regularly admitted students. Please note that for non-continuing students the course work completed will not be credited toward any degree at UC Davis until regular admission or re-admission has been achieved.

All students must either satisfy the prerequisites of courses in which they wish to enroll or have the instructor’s consent to enroll. The instructor of any course may require prospective students to take a formal or informal preliminary test of knowledge that is essential to the course work proposed.

Attendance, Credit and Final Examinations

If you know that you will be absent from the first class meeting of a course in which you are enrolled, you are responsible for notifying the instructor of your intended absence before the first day of instruction. If you do not, you may be required by the instructor to drop the course from your schedule via SISWeb.

Academic requirements in Summer Sessions are the same as in other terms. Since courses are given in six weeks rather than the usual 10-week quarter, students should plan for a concentrated schedule. Those who hope to work at the same time they attend Summer Sessions should be especially aware of this.

Students are expected to attend classes regularly and to complete, by the end of the session, all work and examinations for the courses undertaken. Final examinations are generally held during the last regular meeting of each course.

Acceptance of a particular course toward any degree in the university is subject to the approval of the authorities of the college or school in which the degree is offered. Two summer sessions are generally accepted as the equivalent of one quarter of residence for a bachelor’s degree.

Students from other colleges and universities should ascertain from their own institutions whether courses taken in the Summer Sessions at UC Davis will fulfill specific requirements at the institutions where they are registered.

Establishing Summer Full-Time Status

In order to be certified as a full-time student in a given summer session, you must be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) units per session.

Auditing

There is no auditing during Summer Sessions. All students are required to register and pay fees for any course they wish to attend.

Financial Aid

Financial Aid funds may be available for continuing UC Davis undergraduates who filed a 2007-08 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and complete the Summer Financial Aid application, which will be available at financialaid.ucdavis.edu beginning somewhere around May 5, 2008.

Financial Aid recipients attending Summer Sessions are required to complete at least six (6) units per session for which they are requesting funds.
For more information contact the Financial Aid office, 1100 Dutton Hall, at undergradfinaid@ucdavis.edu or
(530) 752-2390.

Transcripts

You may order an official transcript from the Office of the University Registrar at registrar.ucdavis.edu or at 12 Mrak Hall.

Repeating Courses

Undergraduates may repeat only courses in which they received a D, F or NP. Courses in which students received a grade of D or F may not be repeated on a P/NP basis; courses in which a grade of NP was received may be repeated on a P/NP basis.

Students who illegally repeat courses will be administratively dropped and will not be eligible for a refund. For more information on repeating courses, consult the UC Davis General Catalog.

Incomplete Grades

The grade of incomplete (“I”), may be assigned when a student’s work is of passing quality and represents a significant portion of the requirements for a final grade, but is incomplete for a good cause as determined by the instructor.

An “I” grade must be replaced with a passing grade before the end of the third succeeding quarter (excluding Summer Sessions) of the student’s academic residence, or the grade will revert to an F (or NP or U).

Students may not re-enroll for credit in a course for which an “I” grade has been assigned. For more information on repeating courses or “I” grades, consult the UC Davis General Catalog. (The official version of the General Catalog is the printed edition, which is available at the UC Davis Bookstore. The Web edition is available online at registrar.ucdavis.edu)

UC Davis General Education Requirements

For admitted UC Davis students and potential undergraduate degree candidates: Graduation requirements include the General Education (GE) curriculum, which is described in detail in the UC Davis General Catalog. Admitted UC Davis students should check with their undergraduate colleges to determine the requirements that apply to them.

Candidacy for Degree

A regularly enrolled UC Davis student planning to obtain an undergraduate degree upon completion of work done in either Summer Session should apply for September graduation online on SISWeb or by visiting the Office of the University Registrar by the deadlines posted by the registrar. Degrees completed during either session will be awarded in late October. Information regarding graduate degrees may be obtained from Graduate Studies, 250 Mrak Hall, or by phone at (530) 752-0650.

Courses, Units and Grading System

All UC Davis courses are approved under the quarter system. The credit value assigned to a course is not determined by the number of class meetings per week, but by the number of hours of work required both in and out of class. For most courses, it is expected that the average student spends two hours in preparation for each hour of lecture or discussion.

Courses numbered 99 and below are lower division; courses numbered 100 to 199 are upper division.

The result of the student’s work in each course is reported to the Registrar in one of the following grades: A, excellent; B, good; C, fair; D, barely passing; I, incomplete; and F, not passing. The grades of Passing (P) and Not Passing (NP) are also assigned for some undergraduate courses. The grades of Satisfactory (S) and Unsatisfactory (U) are assigned for some graduate courses.
Grade points are assigned each grade as follows:

  • A+ = 4.0
  • A = 4.0
  • A- = 3.7
  • B+ = 3.3
  • B = 3.0
  • B- = 2.7
  • C+ = 2.3
  • C = 2.0
  • C- = 1.7
  • D+ = 1.3
  • D = 1.0
  • D- = 0.7
  • F = 0.0
  • I = 0.0
  • S/U or P/NP = 0.0

All variable-unit 92, 98, 99, 192, 198 and 199 courses are graded passed/not passed only; all 299 and 299D courses are graded satisfactory/unsatisfactory only.
