Student Teaching Opportunities for Summer 2008

ATTENTION STUDENTS!
SUMMER SESSIONS POSITIONS AS ASSOCIATES IN, TEACHING ASSISTANTS, AND READERS

Introduction
Each year, Summer Sessions employs hundreds of students as Associates In, Teaching Assistant, and Readers. Here is a brief overview of these positions.

  • Associate In__
    • The title Associate In__ is assigned to a graduate student of excellent scholarship and teaching promise, who is temporarily employed as the instructor of an entire lower division course or group of students in a lower division course. An Associate In_ may instruct an upper division course, but only on the basis of a petition for exception to policy whihc has been approved by the Office of Graduate Studies. An Associate In__ should be competent to conduct instruction independently and without supervision.
    • Students appointed to the title Associate In__ receive a fixed monthly stipend related to the percentage of appointment time.
  • Teaching Assistant
    • A Teaching Assistant is a full-time registered graduate student, chosen for excellent scholarship and teaching promise, serving an apprenticeship under the active tutelage and supervision of a regular faculty member.
    • A Teaching Assistant is not responsible for the instructional content of a course, for selection of student assignments, for planning of examinations, or for determining the term grade for students. The Teaching Assistant is responsible for the conduct of recitation, laboratory, or quiz sections under the active direction and supervision of a regular member of the faculty to whom final responsibility for the course's entire instruction, including the performance of Teaching Assistants, has been assigned.
    • Students appointed to the title Teaching Assistant receive a fixed monthly stipend related to the percentage of appointment time.
  • Reader
    • The title Reader is given to a graduate or undergraduate student appointed for the ability to render diverse services as a "course assistant," which will normally include the grading of student papers and examinations. A Reader will not be assigned the responsibilities of leading discussion or laboratory sections.
    • Readers are paid on an hourly basis for hours worked and recorded on their timesheet.

Position Availability
We expect hundreds of courses during each six week Summer Session (Summer Session I is from June 23 to August 1 and Summer Session II is from August 4 to September 12). Although there are plenty of courses the list keeps changing right up to the opening day of each session, and for this reason it is difficult to provide an accurate estimate of position openings. However, our Associate In, Teaching Assistant and Reader needs for Summer 2007 provide a good indication of our likely needs for 2008.  Please click here for estimated position availability by department and employment title for Summer Sessions 2008.
