Your wishes granted by Summer Sessions

UC Davis undergraduates spoke and Summer Sessions listened. More than 2,000 students responded to questions about desired summer courses, their motivation for taking summer courses and preferences for online, in-person or hybrid courses. This was in response to a wish list survey sent earlier this year.

"We value students’ voices," said Omega Lee, Summer Sessions executive director. "That's why we created the wish list — to pinpoint the summer courses they need, helping them stay on track and get ahead."

Top 10 list of classes

  1. General Chemistry
  2. General Physics
  3. Introduction to Biology
  4. Genes and Gene Expression
  5. Advanced Composition
  6. Organic Chemistry Health Sciences
  7. Structural and Functional Biology
  8. Academic Literacies
  9. Introduction to Microbiology
  10. Operating Systems

According to Lee, the survey was developed to understand students' needs and increase enrollment. Much as they do during fall, winter and spring quarters, science courses emerged as the most in-demand courses for Summer Sessions. General Chemistry, General Physics and Introduction to Biology top the list. Currently, many of these high-demand courses are already offered during Summer Sessions. Now, Lee said, this data will help inform how Summer Sessions might expand to meet the demand. Read the list of the top 10 requested courses in the box on the right.

The survey results also show the top reasons students enrolled in Summer Sessions: meeting a major requirement, graduating on time and fulfilling prerequisites for other courses.

This year marks a positive change with more students enrolled and more courses offered than the past few years. The expansion of virtual classes and plans to add more next summer will further increase access to courses.  Lee hopes these efforts, alongside the survey data, will help students access the courses they need to stay on track, get ahead and graduate sooner.
